The Geeky Side of the California Trip

There are many stories to tell from California, but we have been all be very busy since we got home (work, nieces and nephews visiting, dog sitting, etc. etc.) But since the rain has interrupted my mowing, I find myself in front of the computer so why not write a blog post?

Gina will fill you in on the normal people stories so I will write about the more geeky things.

  • Gina’s aunt and uncle not only had no Internet, but they had no PC either. This made it hard to blog/upload pictures while we were there. But they had a neighbor who had their wifi wide open. If we sat in a certain corner of the house, we could get enough of a signal to surf and check email and that was about it. It was kinda nice to not be connected all the time, but you could get on if you needed to. And I needed to a few times. No, really.
  • I didn’t get to as many geocaches as I had hoped — we just didn’t have enough down time to go. I searched for four and found two. Of course, the two I didn’t find where the times I had some of Gina’s relatives with me. But if you ever find yourself by Santa Monica Pier, I highly recommend The Lord of the Rings. As the description says — no hobbits are involved.
  • Disneyland was great! But they love to take your money. One of Disney’s latest ways to soak up your money is the Disney Photo Pass. The first time you see a character at the park, a park worker will snap your photo, scan a card, and give it to you. The next time you can just hand them that card and they scan it after the photos. A few days after your trip, you login to Disney Photo Pass, enter the code on the card, and you can see lo-res versions of the pictures on the site. Of course you can by copies of the photos — for $12.95 each for a 5″x7″. And you can get a DVD of all the photos, too — for $125!! Ouch! And, of course, they made it a hard to copy off of the site. But a little Firefox and a little FireBug made copying them easy. I only wish I could get at the hi-res ones.

Hmm, the rain has stopped so my work outside should continue. More later . . .
