It’s Getting Greener Everyday

Gina posted about this a few days ago but I’m going to expand or perhaps explain some things.

Gina and I have been challenged lately to do more for our environment.  No, this didn’t come from Al Gore (heck, we haven’t even seen the movie!) nor did it come from any one thing or event.  It’s been a slow, gradual process that, now, we are conscious of that change and desire to do more.

Gina thinks that it started with me riding the bus and perhaps it did.  I ride the bus not because it’s good for the Earth but it’s good for my pocketbook and perhaps even better for our car that doesn’t have much life left in it.  But the repair bills are down and I fill up our car about once a month, and it’s an exhilarating feeling.

Fast forward a few months . . . we had some light bulbs go out in light fixtures that are very hard to change.  And, in our living room, I seem to be doing it about every three months.  So I forked over some more money and got fluorescent bulbs.  Not because they use less energy, but because they last so much longer. After putting them in our living room and entry way, our electric bill is down $10/month.

I think these events accelerated the change in our lives.  Now we are being more conscious of recycling and using less.  In the midst of the Great Gathering for our garage sale, we found two nice canvas bags someone gave us once.  Well, those are now Gina’s grocery bags.  Then Gina asked me if I wanted to sell my CD’s that I don’t listen to anymore. I did one better — imported the ones I wanted into iTunes and then put them (and others . . . ) on the garage sale.  It’s been fun rediscovering my music again.  Apparently they are selling well today (it’s the first day of our sale!)

Yes, I know that one family increasing their recycling and decreasing their energy uses doesn’t do much in the grand scheme of things.  But if we talk to others about it, blog about it, and let others see us do it maybe more people will join us.

Who knows where this will all take us — a thatched roof with no walls?  Eh, probably not.  But a simpler life?  For sure.
