Getting ready to dive into the .Net

Gina kinda hinted at it but I’ll reveal more when things are set in stone.  Yes, we are gun-shy this time.

If you look at my del.icio.us bookmarks you will find a lot of new .Net ones.  Yes, this new position will be all, 100% .Net.  Actually. ASP.Net to be precise.  It’s an interesting turn of events that, honestly, I don’t mind.

I spent some time today going an online tutorial but when I stopped typing in stuff and simply did a cut-and-paste, I decided to move on to other things.  First I played with log4net which I have decided is very cool.  Then I played with NAnt. I like NAnt but I’m still wondering what is fun about manually-editing XML files to do builds.  Yes, I realize that log4net, NAnt, and NUnit were all derived from Java packages, but that’s fine.  It tells me that the .Net world is willing to learn from other worlds and take their ideas.  I didn’t start see this until .Net though, so my hopes are high.

I did manage to get Mono installed on my MBP (sudo port install mono — gotta love DarwinPorts) but haven’t gotten MonoDevelop to decide to install gracefully.  That’s okay — I have Emacs and the tools mentioned above.

Update: I wanted to play with CocoaSharp and installing it in DarwinPorts was painful. However, it comes with the Mono Framework for MacOS so I installed it from ports and installed their framework version. Mono from DarwinPorts worked faster, but I did get the Hello World sample to work.
