A Week of Getting Things Done
I’ve still been looking for a way to manage my time — to make sure that everything I need to gets done. LifeHack seems to really like David Allen’s time management philosophy called “Getting Things Done”, though you will probably see it called GTD more often. This link at 43 Folders explains is better than I ever could.
I found the book at the library and skimmed it and then am reading it more carefully. It’s not too different than what I’ve done before, but this time I’m putting *everything* down on the list — not just work related stuff, but stuff for home, stuff for my blog, etc. Allen says to use a trusted system to put your lists down on. I’m using Emacs, thanks to the setup described here. Yes, you do need planner-multi enabled — that lets you assign tasks to an area as well as a project.
After one week, it may be too early to know if it’s successful. But I can say that I seems to get getting lots of things done — things have been putting off (both at home and at work) and I feel less stressed, less hurried, etc. I’m still a little hazy on projects, so I need to read that more carefully — that said, my job is pretty task-based, not project-based.
Overall, it’s been really good — I’ll report more as I keep using GTD.
