Oracle and WebSphere — an unholy pair

Thursday, June 29th, 2006

So we are having problems with WebSphere and Oracle. Here’s the setup:

Oracle 10g running on Windows Oracle 9i running on Linux WebSphere 5.1 running on Linux using the Oracle thin JDBC driver

When we connect WebSphere and the 10g together things work magically well. When we get WebSphere and 9i to talk, we get this error: ORA-12704: [...]

The Boomerangers

Thursday, June 29th, 2006

Here’s a quote from this USA Today article about Generation Y

Everybody talks about the growing number of “boomerang” kids who move back home, but this generation is delaying other traditional measures of adulthood as well.

Findings published in the American Sociological Association journal Contexts in 2004 contrasted young people growing up today with those 40 [...]

My first “apply” call

Wednesday, June 28th, 2006

After many years of using Python, I finally had to use the apply function.

I need to find the path name of a file underneath it’s parent. Yep, it’s confusing. Here is the code:

def findName(fpath,folder):

fsplit=fpath.splitall()

parentSplit=folder.splitall()

startJoin=len(parentSplit)
return apply(os.path.join,fsplit[startJoin:])

The Woman I married . . .

Wednesday, June 28th, 2006

Gina said some nice things about me yesterday. I have to say that she also challenges me — and she makes me want to be a better man. Gina is also a wonderful mother to Leah. And I know that she enjoys it.

Bloglines Freedback

Wednesday, June 28th, 2006

Bloglines is asking for freedback so here I go.

I’ve tried other web-based news aggregators (and even tried to write my own before that) but I always come back to Bloglines. Why? Here are some reasons:

It’s web-based, so I can continue reading my feeds at work and at home, and anywhere else I may [...]

DD: The Lowly Way

Monday, June 26th, 2006

From 1 Corinthians 1:26-31:

Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; Not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame [...]

Is the Blogosphere really ready for this?

Friday, June 23rd, 2006

After much discussion and decision-making, my wife Gina finally has a blog. I told her that I would gladly setup something for her at hostetlerhome.com, but she wanted Xanga instead. So be it.

Expect her blog to be less about computers and more people-oriented (”normal” is how Gina puts it). But, still, I’m [...]

English Test

Friday, June 23rd, 2006

Because I have nothing techincal to post, I might as well brag about how well-read I am . . .

The Librarian You scored 71 erudition! Congratulations! You’re well above average when it comes to your knowledge of English grammar, history, and literature. You may have missed a few questions, but if you [...]

Lunch confidential with Anthony Bourdain

Friday, June 23rd, 2006

I promise that this isn’t turning into a food blog, but there just a lot of stuff happening there.

Like this interview with Anthony Bourdain. He talks about his food adventures, travel, Rachel Ray, etc., and is his usual cranky self:

Q Vegetarians?

A Joyless, angry, frightened, anti-human, and just plain rude. How can you travel and [...]

The Great Barbeque Bible

Wednesday, June 21st, 2006

I’ve blogged on this before, but if you are into grilling, then you need to get the The Barbecue! Bible. Your grilling experience will be expanded beyond burgers, brats, and chicken breasts. Gina could tell you that I can sit and browse this cookbook all summer long. And every year [...]
