Ubuntu can’t find my network

Dear Lazyweb,

Whenever I reboot my Ubuntu machine, it stubbornly refuses startup my network on boot-up. Do enable it, I have to manually hit the “Activate” button on Network Preferences. I’m using a 3c59x-type NIC, so having the system find that module and load it would have to be trivial.

This may not seem like a big deal, since I may reboot once every three to six months, but:

  1. Leah sometimes hits the power cord.
  2. Important services won’t startup, because they are dependent on the network. Stuff like cups and ssh — things I use all the time, but may not remember to start them up when I hit the “Activate” button.

Any ideas?
